Journey to Self-Love

Writer: Brittany EckertBrittany Eckert

I know how you feel. I know how much it SUCKS to feel like everyone is against you. I know what its like to be left out. I know how it feels when people are constantly putting you down for the way you dress, the things you like, your body, and the way you look. I know how it feels because I've been there.

I remember when I hit my breaking point. I was in middle school. I was struggling with body image, self-love, and the extremely ugly desire to fit in. The problem was, I wasn't a star athlete, I wasn't skinny or fit, my skin was a heck of a long ways from perfect, I actually enjoyed school and learning new things, and I couldn't stand seeing people poke fun at each other.

I tried my hardest to fit into a group that did nothing but bring me down even more. I remember going home and crying. I remember feeling like I would never amount to anything because I wasn't in the "cool" crowd. I remember seeing the pain in my mom's eyes because she couldn't fix the pain I was feeling.

I honestly never imagined I could ever truly LOVE myself. If other people didn't accept me for me, how could I love myself? Let me just say, my mindset was COMPLETELY backwards at that point in my life. You see, the truth is, you have to learn to love yourself BEFORE others will love you.

Think of it this way: If I was trying to sell you a product, and I told you it might work it might not. Some days I'm okay with it, and other days I absolutely despise it. I can't honestly say I ever LOVE it. Would you buy the product? HECK NO! I wouldn't even buy the product. In this case, YOU are the product. You have to believe in the product (yourself) and genuinely love it in order for others to give it (you) a try. When others see the way you radiate positive energy and AREN'T afraid to be yourself; when they see the way you are confident in your own skin and truly aren't worried about fitting in, that's when magic happens!
